Student Rights and Grievances

At the University of California, students have constitutionally protected rights of free expression, speech, assembly and worship, as well as rights to due process and equal protection. The Dean of Students provides advice and assistance to students for answering questions and resolving concerns about their rights, as well as informal and formal grievance procedures. If you have questions about your rights, you may contact the office.

Harassment is verbal or physical conduct that unreasonably interferes with a person’s work or education or creates a hostile or offensive working or educational environment, when that conduct is based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender expression, gender identity, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, medical condition (cancer-related or genetic characteristics), genetic information (including family medical history), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship or service in the uniformed services.

The Office of Equity and Equal Protection supports UCSC’s commitment to a discrimination-free work and learning environment. Staff in the office can be contacted via email and by phone.

Students who believe they have experienced or witnessed an act of discrimination or harassment may initiate a report online to bring their concerns to the university’s attention so the incident may be addressed appropriately.

Report Hate and Bias

As reflected in our Principles of Community, the UC Santa Cruz community is “committed to promoting and protecting an environment that values and supports every person in an atmosphere of civility, honesty, cooperation, professionalism and fairness.”

Accordingly, UC Santa Cruz strives to maintain an inclusive and diverse work and learning environment free of hate and bias.

If you believe you have experienced or witnessed an act of hate or bias, report it so the university can follow up appropriately. The university keeps track of these reports and uses them to inform the campus community on climate issues of concern.
